A center console that opens during a crash can allow unsecured cargo to eject into the cabin, increasing the risk of injury.

In certain types of crash events, the center console may unlatch, allowing the storage compartment to open. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
