A seat belt strap that does not extend can fail to restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The driver seat belt emergency locking retractor may lock, causing the seat belt strap not to extend. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."
