Without an audible warning, the driver may forget to buckle the seat belt, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash.
A software error in the electronic control unit (ECU) may disable the audible warning signal for an unbelted driver to fasten their seat belt. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
